Botanical Name: Filipendula ulmaria

Used historically to make a honey-wine drink known as mead or meadwort.  In the early 1800's a professor isolated the first salicylic acid from meadowsweet flowers and from willow bark. Fifty years later, the Bayer Drug company synthesized a new drug (acetylsalicylic acid) based on the structure of salicylic acid and named it aspirin, a combination of acetyl and meadowsweet’s former botanical name, Spirea.

Anti-inflammatory and often used for acidic conditions.

Warning: Use in persons with sensitivity to aspirin or other salicylate containing drugs is cautioned. Use in persons with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is cautioned.
