Origin: Madagascar
Cultivated in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania (Zanzibar), and Brazil,
the species came originally from the Moluccas in the Indian Ocean. It has antiseptic, stimulant, stomachic and digestive properties. As an anti-infectant, cloves have been effective in treating coli bacilli, streptococci, staphylococci, pneumococci infections. Whole and powdered cloves are used for local pain-relieving purposes.
